What Is Socket Extender?

Introduction

Socket Extender is an electrical accessory used to extend the socket’s length. We can plug the extender into a light bulb socket. Porcelain and plastic materials used in the correct ratio builds safe socket extenders. There are special extenders present in the market. These extenders split to let two bulbs run from a single socket. Along with that, it can also bend the direction of the light.

How Socket Extender Works?

Socket extender helps to accommodate two incompatible compact fluorescent bulbs and bulb holders. Extender raises the base of the bulb or any other obstruction in the lamp. Because of this, wider sized bulb fits into the socket.

In some cases, the socket extender helps us to bring the light bulb out of the recessed hole. As a result, the socket extender provides a greater area of coverage to a bulb. On placing the bulb at the rear point, a smaller cross-section area is present. When the bulb moves towards the opening of the socket, light spreads out more. It illuminates a larger area.

Track lighting and recessed lighting fixtures have bulbs fixed inside the holders. It provides directional shielding for the bulb.

Track Lighting Fixture:

In this system, we attach light fixtures on a continuous track. This track contains electrical conductors inside a plastic or aluminum track. Metal plates of socket touching the charged wiring activates the lightbulb.

An important consideration in track lighting fixtures is of wiring method. Some systems use the standard line voltage of 120 volts to power high-wattage bulbs. While some use a low-voltage system that uses a transformer to reduce the current from 120 volts to 12 volts.

It’s a versatile lighting solution used to power spotlights and other fixtures.

Types of Track Lighting:

⦁ Standard track lighting
⦁ Swingarm track lighting
⦁ Monorail track lighting
⦁ Fixed track lighting

Benefits of Track Lighting:

⦁ Space saver
⦁ Moveability
⦁ Highlight features of your own
⦁ Aesthetics

Recessed Lighting Fixture:

It is a light fixture installed into a hollow opening in the ceiling. It seems as if light shines from a hole in the ceiling. It has a downward direction of light flow. Fixtures, light bulbs, and wiring are all hidden away inside the ceiling. We can switch it on and off via a switch.

Recessed lighting fixtures have three different parts:
⦁ Housing: Component installed inside the ceiling. It contains a lamp holder.
⦁ Trim: It is the visible part of the light.
⦁ Bulb: The luminous object plugged inside the holder.

This fixture hides the light source and is an energy-efficient way to provide light. The tradeoff is that they are somewhat permanent and unflattering.

Directional are a special type of recessed lighting. They found similarities with track lighting. They can rotate in different directions to provide lighting at a particular spot.

EXTENSION BOARD VS SOCKET EXTENDER:

Extension boards are a combination of many sockets connected parallel to each other. Shockproof box binds all these sockets into a single instrument. They distribute the power amongst devices connected to these sockets. Because of flexible power cables, they extend the reach of electric sockets.

Extension boards are simple tools, yet offer essential utility functions.

SPECIAL CASE – Wi-Fi EXTENDER:

Wi-Fi extenders only rebroadcast the duplicated signal which results in a longer range. It is also called a Wi-Fi repeater. This extended network still has lesser bandwidth than the original network. This also means lesser speed.

Wi-Fi and socket extenders both can’t repeat the same power received from the source.

CONCLUSION:

While using a socket extender, one should be careful not to overload the socket. Overloading an extension may lead to a short circuit, an overheated circuit, and fire.

Even in the smart homes and wireless charging era, we are a long way from self-powering devices. We can even say that electricity is no longer bound to the traditional plugs and sockets. There are power supply devices that integrate data transfer like USB and HDMI.
