The funny thing about the modern market is that whenever one product category gets really big, it seems like everybody rushes to try to fill the need being currently met by that particular product. This happens all the time. In fact, this is one of the greatest things about living in the United States or any other country with a fairly free or open economy.
The selection goes up, while prices go down. What’s not to love? Well, the problem is, eventually you reach a point where you go from wanting freedom of choice to essentially wishing for freedom from choice. In other words, you reach a point where there’s so many choices on the market that you’re paralyzed. You don’t know which product to go for because there are just so many different features competing for your hard earned dollars.
This is precisely what’s happening in the world of door peephole cameras. There are so many different models out there all trying to outclass each other while reducing their prices. Normally, this is a good thing. We would all love to get the very best products at the lowest prices. The problem here is, how exactly do you make the right call?
Unfortunately, things really aren’t as simple as we assume them to be. For example, take the case of displays for door peephole cameras. We’ve gone a long way from the original black and white display screens that most peephole cameras came with. Back in the bad old days, these devices cost an arm and a leg and had a very simple black and white display.
This can be quite problematic because if the black and white display is not high resolution, they can get really blurry and it’s going to be very hard to make out the shapes because it’s in black and white. It would have been nice if it was in color so at least the color element would give you one additional way to tell things apart and to make out the features of the people that are robbing your house or causing you injury near your front door.
Unfortunately, door peephole cameras did not ship with color displays. They were purely black and white. Now fast forward to today. By fast forward, I’m talking about just skipping a few years. Now, we have high resolution HD full color display. Can you imagine that? It’s like watching a high resolution movie.
The great thing about this type of display is that you can download the video and play it on any screen and never worry about the resolution. That is the promise of HD resolution. High definition resolution, by definition and legal requirement, must not lose its resolution based on the screen size. Now, if you are looking at an actual, authentic, 100% real, high definition display, it wouldn’t matter whether you’re looking at the footage from a 50 inch TV screen or your mobile phone. You’re still treated to a high level of resolution.
Now, the next question to ask then is, is this worth it though? Do you really need an HD display for your best door peephole cameras? Is it worth the extra dollars?
Well, it really all boils down to your needs. The only person that can answer this really is yourself. Do you really need a high definition display? The answer can be related to how quickly you want to be able to tell the features of the people on your front door.
Make no mistake about it, if you’re shooting footage in HD resolution and you have many different points of view, chances are, one of the cameras would produce such a highly accurate image of the perpetrators that it’s only a matter of time until they are caught and prosecuted by the authorities. In other words, you can gain a tremendous peace of mind.
The problem here is that HD displays are not cheap. Not by a long shot. It comes with quite a bit of sticker shock. So you have to ask yourself, is it really worth the extra dollars for me to get HD display? Because this can increase the likelihood that if anything goes wrong, I can get relief.
Now, keep in mind that this is all about likelihood or chances. In other words, it’s not guaranteed. It’s not a slam dunk. If you get an HD display, it doesn’t automatically follow that the cops in your area would know what they’re doing and put two and two together and round up the right suspects. Still, if you are able to get high quality video, you definitely are starting out a better position than if you didn’t.
