Door Peep Hole Camera Buying Guide

Peephole cameras are devices that replace your existing door peephole into something more easily used and that provides better security. They are, essentially, digital versions of the standard peephole that is on most front doors.

But instead of a tiny view that is hard to see in low light and harder still to see through if you have glasses or are shorter than average, these cameras offer a clear image of outside your door on an attached monitor.

Like the Zmodo Greet Video Doorbell that you can get on Amazon, even the most basic camera can offer a 720p camera to clearly see who’s calling by your home.

These door cameras provide an easy for everyone to see who’s outside the door safely so they can decide if they want to let that person into their home.

Different Types

In general, there are three types of smart doorbell security camera systems. The three door cameras I talked about above in my reviews are all type 1 – standalone door cameras. This is because I believe they are the best. They are the type that I personally have found the most benefits from using. However, I’ll briefly review all three types so you can make an informed choice.

Type 1 – Standalone Door Cameras: Standalone door cameras come with a doorbell and LCD display that lets you easily view who’s outside on the monitor. They have no external wiring showing on the door, so they are undetectable to visitors.

Type 2 – Fixed On Door Cameras: Fixed on door cameras are very small in size and has to be fixed onto the door. Can be used as an extended surveillance system with recording viewed on external device.

Type 3 – Detachable Door Cameras: Detachable Door Cameras provide very wide viewing angles and can be viewed through with or without a camera. Can be installed with various extendable display devices and the video can be viewed from anywhere.

Benefits of Owning a Peephole Camera

You may believe that only very paranoid people would install a peephole camera to their front door. However, this is simply not the case. More and more regular people like you and I are choosing to install digital door viewers in their homes and in the homes of their elderly parents. With petty theft and violent crimes on the rise, you can’t put a price on your family’s safety.

I for one, would rather be cautious and hope that my camera never catches anyone nefarious than be the victim of a house break-in or worse and have no evidence to hand to police. Even just having a camera can provide a great piece of mind, as well as providing a number of more banal benefits.

-Only Allow Entry To People You Want: You may not want to admit it but often some of our house guests are people we’d really rather not let into our home. They don’t have to be hardened criminals, but a certain in-law who’s always looked down on you or a “frenemy” who makes you feel bad by constantly badmouthing people. And sometimes we’re simply not in the mood to entertain guests, even if we’re fond of them. I always want my home to be a source of positive energy and that can be achieved by being selective of who we let inside it. Having a door camera lets you see who’s outside without alerting them to your presence so you can choose whether to open the door to them or not. So the next time that persistent door-to-door salesmen or your neighbor Jillian stops by, you have the option to keep the door closed to them.

-A Clearer Picture: While the idea of a standard peephole is to allow you to see who’s outside, in reality, the view they give isn’t great. With such a small viewing space that actually makes what’s outside appear smaller than in reality, it can be difficult to make out who it is, especially in low light or in foggy weather. Not to mention the famous fish-eye effect! If you have bad eyesight, it’s even worse. Or if you wear glasses that interfere with looking through the peephole clearly. Or maybe you simply don’t see very well with only one eye. For all of these reasons and more, the clear image a peephole camera provides an easy way for everyone to see who’s on the other side of the door.

-A View For All Heights: Peepholes are usually placed at the average eye-level of an adult and while that may be fine for most people, it’s inconvenient for those who fall above or below that height. Personally, I’m taller than average and hated having to stop to see through my old peephole. It caused pains in my back and neck and it often annoyed me so much that I would just open the door without looking because I didn’t want to lean down to look through it. It can be even more inconvenient if you’re shorter than the norm and need a step to be brought up to the right level. And for children, they either have to stand on a high stool or step or open the door to possible strangers – both options I’d rather avoid. The convenient display of a digital door viewer allows for people of all height, young or old, tall or short, to see easily through the peephole with just the push of a button.

-Safety: This may be the most obvious benefit, but it definitely can’t be overlooked. You don’t have to  pessimistic or paranoid to know that sometimes bad things happen. Houses are broken into, homes are robbed, people are held at gunpoint, some are injured or worse. If you live in an area that’s had a lot of recent crime or even if you don’t, a peephole camera provides a little extra security and privacy. By buying a digital doorway viewer like the Ring Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell, you can even keep an eye on your home when you’re away from it. Home is where the heart is, after all, so you want to be able to keep it safe.

-For Your Parents: It may be unpleasant to think about but many petty criminals target houses where they know elderly people live alone. As we age, our eyesight deteriorates, our mobility and stamina decrease and we are less able to defend ourselves. This makes our elderly parent’s prime targets for house break-ins. Installing a peephole camera on your parent’s home can provide both you and them peace of mind and make it easier for them to be selective of who they open the door to. And with an easy-to-view monitor, the visitor’s face is clear, even for aging eyes.

What To Look For When Buying A Wireless Doorbell with Camera

The great benefits they provide make them suitable for everyone and far outweigh the initial costs of the device. Head over to Amazon now, to purchase any of the three best wireless doorbell camera I have reviewed above and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. If you’re wondering how I chose those particular products to review and what you should look for in a peephole camera, then check out this basic buying guide to help you understand why I chose those products as the best in their categories.

-Screen Size: One of the main benefits of buying a peephole camera is the screen display that gives you a larger viewing space than a standard peephole. Therefore, you want one that is at least 2.5 inches to ensure excellent visibility for everyone. The Zmodo Greet Video Doorbell boasts an impressive 3.5-inch screen and is a fantastic value.

-Picture Quality: There’s no point having a digital door camera if the picture on the screen is blurry and hard to make out. Before buying, check the resolution to make sure it’s up to par. If you see a peephole camera with megapixels of around 1.2 then even if you do capture a picture of your visitor, it will be difficult to make out.

-Low Light Abilities: The ability to see outside even at night is one of the biggest advantages an electronic peephole viewer has over a standard peephole. So you should make sure that the digital door viewer you’re buying lets you see who’s at your door in low light. You can find the Ring Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell on Amazon, which provides crystal clear HD picture even at night time, thanks to its night vision infrared.

-Does it Fit Your Door: You’d be surprised how many people overlook this, but you should definitely check if the camera you want to buy will actually fit your door. Not all doors are created equal and not all door viewers are either. The only way to be certain is to measure your door’s thickness and the size of your current peephole and see if it suits the product you wish to buy.

Picture quality, screen size, and low light abilities are the three most important things to factor when getting a peephole camera

-Battery: Digital peep hole cameras are battery powered, which is the only real negative I’ve experienced with them. A low-quality camera will drain it’s batteries quickly and the cost of constantly replacing them will add up. Check if your choice supports rechargeable batteries and if it features any battery-saving features.

-Additional Features: Does the camera record visitors who come to your door? Is it motion-sensor? Does knocking trigger an alert or picture? Is it Wifi enabled? Will you know who’s been to your door even when you’ve been away from home? There are so many features offered by today’s current electronic door viewers. Go for a basic peephole camera or get one with the top features, the choice is yours.

-Price: How much are you willing to spend? What’s your budget? This is an important consideration before buying any product. My reviews cover digital door viewers at varied price points to suit your budget. Whether you want an affordable, basic model, a premium, impressively-featured model or a customizable option that lets you start basic and add more features when you need them, there’s an option for everyone above.

-Where to Buy: You can find cameras in a variety of brick and mortar and online stores, including Amazon, which offers the best prices for all the ones I reviewed above.

Important Features to Look For in a Smart Door Viewer

When it comes to the additional features, the options are fairly limitless. There are some features that I think are particularly important and provide additional security beyond the basic coverage. The feature-packed Ring Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell comes with all of these features. .

-Record Each Visitor: This is the most important feature and the one I feel every camera should have. This feature will take a picture of each visitor who calls to the door (usually triggered by knocking or by motion-sensor), so you always know who’s been calling to your door, even when you weren’t home to answer it.

-Motion Sensor: This doorbell technology is particularly useful if you feel that people have been loitering outside your home. This feature is triggered by someone approaching your door and will either take a picture or alert you to their presence.

-Knocking Sensor: Every time someone knocks, this feature will “wake-up” your digital door viewer, either by triggering it to take a picture or alerting you to the person outside.

-External Viewing: Some cameras can connect to other devices such as your smartphone or PC to let view whoever is at your door from that device. This is particularly useful if you’re away from the house or if you don’t feel safe approaching the door.

-Two-Way Communication: This feature is very useful in that it allows you to not only see the visitor but hear and even speak with them. This is great if you don’t want to open the door to someone but need a way to politely ask them to leave.

How Safe Are Smart Doorbells with Cameras?

Yes, they are. A door bell with camera not only provide you the added security of being able to tell who’s at your door and record their image, they also go completely undetected by the visitor.

Because the camera is situated inside the peephole, they remain completely inconspicuous to people unless they are told about their presence. So you can safely see who is outside, without alerting them to your presence and letting them know you are home.

They also provide protection against reverse peephole tools that are often used by criminals to attempt to see inside your home. Instead of seeing inside, their shady behavior will be caught on the camera, so you’ll have evidence to show the police.
