How it Works

Hydrofracking Water Well

There are many processes done to make sure that a well is working at its best capacity. One of these is hydrofracking.

Hydrofracking is a procedure done to increase the water flow in a well. It is one of the most effective approaches that can help homeowners improve their water yield. If your well isn’t yielding enough water or there have been mineralization causing fractures in the well, hydrofracking can be your go-to solution.

Initially, fracking was used to increase gas and oil well production. But lately, the concept of hydrofracking has come into existence. Licensed and registered well water contractors make sure that your well is yielding enough water by treating it with hydrofracking.

In this article, we’ll be looking at how the process of hydrofracking works and how it can increase the water flow in a well.

How does hydrofracking work?

During hydrofracking of the water well, one or two hard rubber sleeves are lowered down into the well. These sleeves or balloons are inflatable and are also known as packers. Initially, all the wires, pipes, and the pump in the water well are removed. Then, the packers are inflated in order to seal off or close the section of the well wall it is attached to.

The optimum temperature for setting a packer is usually twenty feet below the end of the casing and about sixty feet below the ground surface.

Then, high-pressure water is pumped into the packers. If there is only one inflatable packer used, the high-pressure water is pumped below it. Most hydrofracking processes involve the pressure of about 500 psi to 2000 psi. Rarely, some hydrofracking equipment also goes up to 3,000 psi. Usually, about fifty gallons of water are pumped into the packer in a minute.

As the surrounding rocks around the sealed-off section of the well resist the water flow, the water pressure within the section increases. If there is a sudden drop in the pressure, it means that the surrounding rocks of the sealed-off area accept water. This means that the hydrofracking process was successful.

However, if there are more fissures being opened in the well, it may cause a strong backflow of turbid water. This usually happens when you stop pumping the water into the well. On the other hand, if you see that the pressure of the water well is constantly increasing up to the maximum capacity, it may mean that the hydrofracking process isn’t successful.

If you want to use only one packer for the hydrofracking process, you can reduce the cost of the process. However, when you use a double packer system, the probability that your hydrofracking process will be successful in increasing the yield of well water can increase. This is because, with a double packer system, you can pressurize a selected zone in the well by inflating both packers.

What are the benefits of hydrofracking a water well?

Hydrofracking a well can provide many benefits. Listed here are a few of them.

  • Hydrofracking can significantly increase the output of water wells that have low yields. The low yield that may be caused by mineralization in the water wells can be treated by using either a single packer system or a double packer system.
  • Hydrofracking water well makes sure that there is no need for the regular replenishing of water. With hydrofracking, you can ensure that your water well yields clean and adequate water year-round.
  • By hydrofracking, you can make sure that you have an independent water supply. Municipal water systems are often not suitable for many homeowners and their needs. By hydrofracking your private water well system, you can ensure that your water is controlled by yourself.
  • With private water wells, you can significantly reduce the cost when compared to municipal water suppliers.

Wells that receive their water from fissures and fractures in underground bedrock benefit the most from a hydrofracking well procedure. You must, however, ensure that the procedure will benefit your water well. Or else, it would be a waste of time. There may be alternative measures that can be used to increase the water flow and supply of your water well.

Conclusion

Water well hydrofracking is a fairly modern concept since it was used for fracking oil pumps before. This means that not a lot of water well services providers have the appropriate experience for hydrofracking water wells. This calls for more experienced professionals who understand if your well needs the process or not and, if it does, then how to do it appropriately.
